But Add Magic is an American live-activeness family telly serial, loosely based on the volume of the same name by Cindy Callaghan.[1] It was produced by Amazon Studios. A pilot was produced in 2015 and the series commissioned for a full season the following year.[2] Amazon renewed the series for a second season in June 2016 afterward it "set a record every bit the most successful Amazon Original Kids premiere weekend in terms of U.South. Prime Video streams and hours."[3]

A followup serial, Just Add Magic: Mystery City, was released on January 17, 2020.[four]

In the town of Saffron Falls, teenage girls Kelly, Darbie, and Hannah are best friends who love cooking. While making a block for Kelly's grandma's (who has a mysterious illness and cannot talk) birthday, the girls make a recipe using an ancient mysterious cookbook they discover in the attic of Kelly's business firm. The recipes have strange names, like "Close'em Upward Shortcake" and "Hazelnut Healing Tart", and crave unusual ingredients, such as "Cedronian vanilla" and "Taurian thyme". The girls visit Mama P's shop to get the ingredients for recipes. Mama P reveals that she knows what the ingredients are and the girls conclude that Mama P knows about the magic because she appears to have all-encompassing knowledge of magical ingredients.[five]

Kelly, Darbie, and Hannah investigate the magic recipes and face the temptations of using magic to aid overcome the everyday challenges of existence eye school girls. Furthermore, they discover that Kelly'southward odd neighbor Ms. Silvers too has a connection to magic. The girls realize that they are the protectors of the magical cookbook and that there were many others before them, three of whom were Mama P, Ms. Silvers, and Grandma Becky. Among all this, Kelly has one main goal: to find the magical recipe that volition set her grandmother'south mysterious illness. It is revealed that Charles Peizer and his sister Rose Peizer were one time the protectors of the cookbook. The OC's research more into Chuck's moving-picture show and discover out that the Peizers were the richest family during that fourth dimension and the West Peizer Park in Saffron Falls was a function of their estate.

Mama P's has been bought by a coffee concatenation in Springtown Coffee. Kelly, Hannah, and Darbie become suspicious of the manager Erin Chua. They soon notice clues of someone who knows that magic is existent, fifty-fifty after all memories of magic have been erased. This, someone, steals their newly harvested Nighttime Blooming spices, and is therefore dubbed the "Dark Bandit." The girls meet Darbie'south friend, Piper, and they innovate her to magic. The four of them piece of work together to notice the Night Bandit. It turns out that Kelly is actually the Night Bandit and she was poisoned past the spell that brought back the garden in the previous flavor, Come Back Kombucha Tea. On Jan 4, 2018, a trailer was released announcing more episodes,[half dozen] which premiered on Amazon on January xix, 2018, as an extension of the 2d flavor.[7]

On January 11, 2019, a trailer was released announcing the 3rd season, which premiered on Feb ane.[eight]

On September twenty, 2019, an announcement was made that a Just Add together Magic special would come up out on October 25.[nine]

Reception [edit]

Angela Arsenault of Decider.com positively reviewed the first season of the series, calling it "A More Worthy Addition To The Teenage Witch Sub-Genre[.]"[10] Jessica Jernigan also gave the 2d season a positive review, maxim that "[d]arkness and danger is leavened with sense of humor. And the supernatural elements are amplifications of real-life situations and experiences. By the season finale, it's not simply magic that saves the day—it's also humanity."[xi] Giving the first flavour 4/5 stars, Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media noted that

[t]his enjoyable drama series has many practiced qualities, from a solid trio of friends in the forefront to how carefully the story respects multigenerational family units and traditions. Kelly [the main grapheme] is the production of a loving home and loyal friends, and both influences guide her decisions. That doesn't mean she's perfect at every turn, and her decision to dabble in magic unsupervised raises some bug parents and kids can discuss, but the fact that she's motivated past compassion more mere curiosity works in her favor.[12]
